ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA, FEBRUARY 14, 1999
We believe that worship is a powerful way to connect with God and experience His presence in our lives. Our worship services are designed to be uplifting, inspiring, and centered around the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Your donation will help restore Bethel A.M.E. Church to its glory and to create more opportunities for our congregation and the community.
At Bethel A.M.E., we are dedicated to spreading the love and teachings of Jesus Christ to our community and beyond. Through our various ministries and programs, we strive to make a positive impact on the world around us.

According to the cornerstone, Bethel AME Church was started by the hands of freed slaves in 1863, and has stood throughout time for over 160 years. Bethel A.M.E.’s church history recalls General Sherman’s march throughout Georgia. At the end of the Civil War, there were 200 freed slaves remaining in Acworth. The emancipated slaves immediately became a vital part of the Acworth community, and took on a monumental task, and used their artistry and skill to build a church. After the end of slavery, members of the Bethel A.M.E. church and Zion Hill Missionary Baptist church shared this church building. This tradition of alternating Sunday services lasted for many years until Zion Hill Missionary Baptist church moved to a more contemporary church building in 1914; while the members of the Bethel A.M.E. remained in the original church building built by the freed slaves. After purchasing one acre of land in 1871, the present sanctuary of Bethel AME Church began construction, sometime between 1871 and 1882, when George McDonnell, Benjamin Davenport and Mitchell Saddler, trustees of Bethel, purchased one acre of land from L.L. Robertson for the sum of $27.
Bethel, known as “The Church on the Hill,” is home to the historic Bell that rang
out as the voice of the community. The bell
once announced Sunday morning and holiday
services as well as the neighborhood “fire
alarm.” It rang out the heart of a congregation
that focused on loving God, God's Church,
and God's people. One of the early members was J.R. Fleming, who was appointed pastor from 1895 through 1897. In September 1990, under the leadership of Rev. Delman O. Smith, Bethel went from meeting every first and third Sunday to a full station Church. In 1994, the Rev. Samuel S. Giddings was assigned as the Pastor of Bethel. Rev. Giddings was instrumental in taking the necessary steps in having Bethel placed on the Local and National Historic Registry. Many pastors have graced Bethel's pulpit to preach and teach God's word. Bethel have a rich history of serving others and sharing the message of Christ with all who will listen. The building now stands in much need of repairs and it is our prayer that this beautiful Church building will be restored.
